Ultimate Starter kit tutorial 10 problems.

Hi.
Total Newbie.
RaspPi 3b and Ultimate starter kit. (using GPIO extension board)
I have been going thru the tutorials. Basically wiring as instructed and then running the python script supplied on CD.
All was gong well till tutorial10.

BIT0 = 3
BIT1 = 5
BIT2 = 24
BIT3 = 26

Pins 3, 5 and 24 ARE NOT USED IN THE WIRING???
Im obviously missing something, so if someone could explain like im 5yo that would be fantastic.

When I wire it and run the code, all I get is 1 or 2 of the segments for each digit to light.
