LCD 1602 with I2C Module

Hi i tried to perform the Chapter 18 from the StartingKit for RaspberryPi where LCD1602 Display is introducded. The cables are correctly linked and if i put the switch of the module to on then the LCD display is on but i can see no characters, pixels or anything else?! If i start the python script from chapter 18 also nothing changes (only very little changes of the contrast of the display are visible). What is wrong? Defect display? How am i able to check this?

Please turn the blue knob on the back to make the text display clearly.
Use 3.3V and 5V as the VCC of the LCD1602 module, you need to adjust the blue knob to the appropriate position respectively.
